A Calgary judge has found a father and stepmother guilty of killing their six-year-old girl.

Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon were convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday in the death of Meika Jordan.

Justice Rosemary Nation took about 40 minutes to read her decision, reports 660 News.

People wept openly in the courtroom as the judge read details of the injuries the girl suffered at the hands of her father and Magoon before her death in 2011.

Court had previously heard how Meika was punched, burned, dragged, and thrown down the stairs. She died of blunt force trauma and abdominal injuries. She was in the care of Jordan and Magoon at the time.

Earlier, the pair testified that the child was injured after she fell down stairs, but the judge rejected that claim, saying they caused Meika's death, reports Global News.

The couple had been charged with first-degree murder, but Nation said it was impossible to determine who delivered the fatal blow to the little girl.

During an undercover police sting, both suspects had confessed to abusing and torturing the little girl, reports CBC News.

Jordan and Magoon will return to court for sentencing in September. Second-degree murder convictions come with a life sentence, and parole eligibility after 10 to 25 years.
