If the court jester's job was to speak the truth in medieval times, it might just be Amy Schumer's job to speak the truth in 2015.
The comedian, who is absolutely everywhere right now, gave a rousing speech about the expectations placed on women's bodies when she accepted a Glamour U.K. Women of the Year award on Wednesday.
Referencing fellow winner Ellie Goulding's speech in which she described herself as "a real woman," Schumer called the singer a supermodel, and followed that up with, "I'm probably like 160 pounds right now, and I can catch a dick whenever I want." (The moment happens at 0:47 in the video above.)
It was a throwaway comment that spoke to a much larger truth: that many women think they need to be a certain weight or look a certain way in order to attract men. But as far as Schumer is concerned, that is simply not true.
The "Trainwreck" star, who talks frequently about her love of sex in her stand-up, is also quite vocal about blasting society for its portrayal of women in the media. As she said in the rest of her no-holds-barred speech, she remembers when she made the decision to stop caring.
At the end of an anecdote about sex with a man who didn't care about her, Schumer said she'd had enough, and decided to find her self-esteem. "I'm not going to apologize for who I am, I'm going to actually love the skin that I'm in and not be, like, striving for some other version of myself."
It's a very modern lesson for a new way of thinking about ourselves — and let's hope it only gets louder.
