French rider dies in crash during notoriously treacherous motorcycle race Isle of Man

DOUGLAS, Isle of Man - A French rider has died in a crash during a motorcycle race on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.

Organizers of the Isle of Man TT races say Franck Petricola, 32, was killed during a superbike qualifying session on Wednesday.

Gary Thompson, clerk of the course for the Isle of Man TT, said in a statement Thursday "the road racing community has lost a remarkable man."

An investigation into the crash is under way.

Petricola, who suffered life-threatening injuries in a race in Northern Ireland last year, was making his debut in the treacherous TT races that are held on more than 37 miles of public roads around the island.

The BBC says there have been 141 fatalities at the races since they began in 1907.
