Canada midfielder Sophie Schmidt says teammates may go red as well as fans

EDMONTON - Canadian midfielder Sophie Schmidt's blond hair is tinged with pink on top these days.

But the 26-year-old from Abbotsford, has no plans to up the ante and go patriotic red for the Women's World Cup.

"No, I'm staying with this," she said with a laugh on the eve of Canada's opening match against China. "My teammates have got the red covered."

Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc added red to her mohawk for the occasion. Defender Kadeisha Buchanan sported a bright red braid.

"We're asking Canada to have that sea of red and so why not start with us?" she said.
