Alberta government sets up phone line, website for reporting fossil finds

EDMONTON - The Alberta government is making it easier to find your inner Indiana Jones.

Alberta Culture and Tourism has established a dedicated phone line and website to help Albertans report the location and details of any artifact and fossil discoveries.

Officials say the severe flooding in southern Alberta in 2013 exposed many previously unknown sites, with a number of discoveries already reported by the public.

“The Report a Find program will allow Albertans to have their discoveries verified by archaeologists and paleontologists and help us to conserve these valuable resources for the benefit of all Albertans today and into the future,” David Eggen, minister of Culture and Tourism, said in a statement.

According to the province, experts will explore the river banks and areas impacted by past flooding throughout the summer in an effort to identify, preserve and protect these treasures.
