Mayor John Tory talks Gardiner East, carding on Metro Morning

Toronto Mayor John Tory joined Metro Morning host Matt Galloway to talk about the future of the Gardiner East and his surprising new position on the controversial police practice of carding this morning.

Tory restated his position that the so-called hybrid option for the 1.7-km stretch of the Gardiner Expressway east of Jarvis Street remains "the most responsible choice."

He said he campaigned on a promise that he wouldn't increase congestion and commuting times, and that his election victory was a mandate from residents to ensure that the city's traffic problems were addressed.

Tory also said that ending the controversial practice of police carding is among his top priorities. The mayor revealed an unexpected change of heart on carding over the weekend, just days after a group of notable Torontonians gathered at city hall to call for an end to the measure.
