State funeral in Montreal today for ex-Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau

MONTREAL - A state funeral will be held in Montreal this afternoon for former Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau.The longtime politician died on June 1 at the age of 84.Parizeau is remembered nationally as the Parti Quebecois premier during the 1995 sovereignty referendum that nearly split Quebec from the rest of Canada.The economist has also been hailed for his contribution to developing modern Quebec as a key figure in the 1960s behind the nationalization of Hydro-Quebec and the creation of the provincial pension fund manager.Premier Philippe Couillard has announced the province will honour Parizeau by renaming the Caisse de depot et placement building after him.The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. eastern at Saint-Germain-D'Outremont Church.Thousands paid their respects to Parizeau over the weekend as his body lay in state in Montreal and Quebec City.
