CP NewsAlert: Alberta NDP plan higher taxes for the wealthy, big business

EDMONTON - The NDP government has launched Alberta's first post-Tory legislature session with a throne speech that promises laws to increase taxes on the wealthy and large corporations. The New Democrats say they will also ban unions and businesses from donating to political parties.Premier Rachel Notley says these are critical steps to improve accountability and faith in government. The NDP ended nearly 44 years of Progressive Conservative governments when the party won a majority in last month's election.Opposition Wildrose Leader Brian Jean says he supports the ban on donations, but adds that the NDP needs to cut government waste before increasing taxes.Progressive Conservative Leader Ric McIver says banning corporate donations will force businesses to find less transparent ways of getting money to the parties of their choice.
