Catholic school board must choose between 2 Annex schools to close

The Toronto Catholic District School Board will hear from parents tonight about the closure of a Catholic school in the Annex.

The board needs to decide whether to close St. Bruno or St. Raymond in the area of Bathurst and Dupont streets.

Both schools are dealing with declining enrolment.

"They're both fantastic Catholic communities," said Ward 9 trustee Jo-Ann Davis. "An argument could be made either way and I'll be looking to seek what the local Catholic community there wants to do."

Davis said the closure is partially due to the Bathurst areas changing demographics, with large families no longer living in the community.

"I think people know from a financial perspective it certainly would be preferential to be having an amalgamated school," she said.

Davis said parents are interested in how a larger student body might lead to daycare or enhanced programs such as French immersion or an International Baccalaureate program.

"It's really all about what can we do now that we've got a mass that allows us to attract providers and programming that we can't as a smaller school," she said.

The board will seek to keep the location of whichever school closes in public hands.

The meeting is at St. Raymond at 270 Barton Avenue, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
