Decommissioned military mainstay being turned into Afghan war monuments

CALGARY - Light armoured vehicles that carried Canadians troops through wartorn Afghanistan are being turned into monuments.The LAVs were the workhorses of the Canadian Forces during the Afghanistan mission.The 250 retired vehicles are being stripped of their engines and weaponry and being offered as memorials to communities across Canada.Shawn Deane of Canada Company says 30 applications have already been received along with 20 expressions of interest.The vehicles carry a price tag of $15,000 each.Deane says the LAVs were not only built in Canada, but became synonymous with Canadian troops on the ground in Afghanistan.The monuments are to be available over the next two years.
