A teenage girl has died after she was shot in Toronto's Jamestown neighbourhood Thursday morning.
Toronto police confirmed the teen's death on Twitter and asked the public for information related to the deadly shooting.
The girl has been identified as 14-year-old Lecent Ross, according to CTV News. She was unconscious and not breathing when she was found by police in a townhouse on Jamestown Cresent.
Paramedics performed CPR before transporting her to hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
"It's unbelievable the number of guns in the city. And people are using them," Toronto Police Det. Rich Petrie told reporters at a press conference. "We really do rely on the public. Somebody knew about this gun and chose to turn a blind eye."
Toronto Police confirm that there were other "young people" in the townhouse at the time of the shooting. They are cooperating with the investigation.
At this time, investigators are unable to confirm whether the gunshot was intentional or not and who fired the gun. The weapon, a .40 cal Smith-Wesson pistol, has been seized and is being examined by the police for DNA.
Police are considering an accidental misfire as a possible scenario.
An investigation remains ongoing.
