Colin Hill Shot To Death Trying To Stop Break-In At Surrey Home

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

SURREY, B.C. - Police say a man who was shot to death in Surrey, B.C., was defending his home from an attempted break-in.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says local realtor Colin Hill, 42, was killed during an altercation with an alleged intruder.

Ashton says the suspect escaped in a stolen vehicle and was arrested in Burnaby later Sunday after witnesses reported a man with a gun attempting to break into an apartment.

She says the shooting appears to be random and that Hill and the suspect did not know each other.

A 22-year-old man Surrey resident is facing second-degree murder charges and is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

"This was a tragic and truly senseless act that has no rationale," Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said at a news conference. "I’m still angry at this pointless loss of life."
