The B.C. man who was shot to death during an attempted break-in at his Surrey home died protecting his family, according to his wife.

Colin Hill, 42, was killed Sunday when he tried to stop an alleged intruder. Two days later, his wife posted on Facebook, describing what happened.

Becky Zhou said her husband yelled that the suspect had a gun and told his family to hide before trying to hold the door shut. He was able to lead the man outside, giving the family time to hide, she said.

"[The] very best husband a person could ever ask for," Zhou wrote. She added that everyone else in the family was unharmed. Hill and Zhou have two children.

"This was a tragic and truly senseless act that has no rationale," Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said at a news conference Monday. "I’m still angry at this pointless loss of life."

Khouri Lamar Green, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder. He allegedly fled the Surrey home in a stolen vehicle and was arrested in Burnaby several hours later, trying to break into another home.

Green, an aspiring rapper, has a record of break-and-enter related offences, reported CBC News. He was on probation when he was arrested on Sunday.
