A golfer is in hospital after he was struck by lightning on a Canmore golf course Thursday.
According to EMS, the strike happened shortly after noon at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club.
The man, in his early 60s, was taken by ambulance to Canmore hospital, where he was transported to Calgary by STARS air ambulance.
He was breathing when paramedics arrived on scene.
Darren Cooke, director of golf at the club, told the Calgary Herald that the man was with a group of other golfers who tried to take shelter when the rain began. However, a tree next to the shelter was struck by lightning, somehow also hitting the man.
660News meteorologist David Spence says lightning strikes, while potentially very harmful, are less deadly than people think.
Instead, he said, injuries like burns, memory loss and paralysis are all more common.
