University of Toronto students and Pan Am volunteers pen song for Games

Four singing siblings from Scarborough who have been volunteering at the Pan Am Games swimming races have written a special song for the competition.

Hasna, Hana, Sarah and Bilal Syed — who sing in a group called DEYSofficial — posted their song on YouTube this week

"A lot of friends asked us if we were going to write a song (about the Games) so we brainstormed and came up with some ideas about what they meant to us," Hasna Sayed told CBC News.

"We came up with themes like home, inspiration, winning, and people coming together."

The four, who've been singing together for a decade, wrote the song in a week.

The feel-good tune, featuring the quartet's beautiful harmonies accompanied only by acoustic guitar, opens with these lines: "Now is the time, it's about to begin, take a leap forward like champions. Set your sights on what's big and believe, it's time to shine, taste your dreams."

Students excel academically

The four Syeds excel in both song and in their studies.

Hasna, 21, is in her final year of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science; Hana, 18, is in her second year of a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience; and Sarah, 17, will be studying Biology this fall while her twin brother, Bilal, will be studying Life Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology this fall.

The Syeds, who are U of T Ambassadors at the Games, are, however, split when it comes to TO2015's choice to have Kanye West at the closing ceremonies.

While they're not sure about West, they said DEYSofficial would love the opportunity to play the closing ceremony.

For now, they're set to perform their Games-inspired song on July 22 at U of T's Scarborough campus.
