B.C. fires: Bear Creek wildfire near Kelowna prompts evacuation alert

A wildfire near Kelowna, B.C. has prompted an evacuation alert for 80 properties around Bear Creek Provincial Park.

The fire started on Sunday and was assessed at more than two hectares later that evening.

The Central Okanagan Regional District said air tankers and helicopters were able to establish a fire retardant box around the fire over the course of the day. Foresty service personnel will reassess the situation on Monday morning and provide an update on the fire and the evacuation alert at 10 a.m. PT.

Watch video of the fire burning.

There were 24 B.C. firefighters monitoring the fire overnight and working to contain it.

RCMP officers have asked boaters to keep clear of the area around the park to allow air tankers and helicopters clear access to water from Okanagan Lake.
