"Heard this young man was a big fan," Drake wrote in the photo caption. "Rest In Peace Jamal. Watch over me from way up above!'

The young man in the photo is Abdul Jamal Ottun, a 17-year old student who attended school in Surrey, England. Ottun drowned in Shawnigan Lake, B.C. earlier this month, while on a rugby tour.

His heartbroken friends started the hashtag #DrakeNoticeJamal on social media, and campaigned to have the Canadian singer acknowledge Jamal in some way online:

The campaign went viral, with thousands of tweets and posts on Instagram:

@champagnepapi it would have meant a lot to him and nows means a lot to a lot of people #drakenoticejamal

And it worked. Rest in peace, Jamal. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
