Pit bull attack sends 2 to hospital in New Westminster

Two people were taken to hospital in New Westminster, B.C., after they were attacked by a dog early Thursday morning.

Police said a pit bull seriously injured a woman inside an apartment at 325 Ash St., just before 3 a.m. A man was also bitten, but his injuries are said to be less serious.

Police said the woman suffered "life-long" injuries to her face and head. She was wheeled out to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher, with a bed sheet covering her entire body.

Police described the scene inside the apartment as extremely bloody, and first responders were seen outside cleaning off the bottoms of shoes and equipment.

Police said it was unclear what caused the dog to bite the people, and that at least the woman was a resident of the apartment. A New West Police Department sergeant said there were also children in the apartment.

Police were alerted to the attack when neighbours heard screaming from inside the apartment and called 911.
