An extreme athlete whose wife is due to give birth this week has died in an accident on the Stawamus Chief mountain in Squamish, B.C.
Kyle MacDonald-Wolochatiuk, 40, hit a tree after leaping from the mountain's first peak and fell to his death on Sunday, the BC Coroner's Service said in a news release.
The extreme sport is similar to paragliding, but uses smaller fabric wings to help participants fly faster and closer to a slope. The Chief is a popular location for hikers, climbers, BASE jumpers and paragliders.
Wolochatiuk's wife, Krista, is due to give birth on Wednesday, according to Seaway News.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP are investigating Wolochatiuk's death.
In 2013, speed flyer Jeff Bertoia fell to his death from the Chief after jumping off the rock with two friends.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated Kyle Wolochatiuk was originally from Cambridge, Ont.; in fact, he was born in Toronto and grew up in Williamstown.
