4 wrinkle mitigation measures

Wrinkles aren't about age alone and there are simple ways to avoid fine lines, experts say.

Most people think of frown lines, creases and crow's feet as age-related. Darker skin offers some built-in protection, but it's not perfect.

The more you're out in the sun, the more you're likely to develop permanent lines.

Sun exposure is the biggest cause of wrinkles as we age, said Dr. Vince Bertucci, a dermatologist in Woodbridge, Ont.

That's why experts say the best ways to avoid fine lines are:

- Stay out of the sun.

- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly.

- Put on moisturizer daily because wrinkles will look worse with dehydrated skin.

Bertucci says the position of wrinkles often reveal someone's sleep position.

If you sleep on your side, you're likely to have wrinkles on the side of your forehead. If you sleep on your face, you may develop deep folds around your nose.

"Individuals who tend to have deeper nabial folds, especially the ones that look etched or engraved in the skin, they will often sleep on their face or on the side of their face," Bertucci says. "You can tell the skin is being compressed."

Sandra Guerra came to see Bertucci because she said her wrinkles made her feel less confident. She's taking his sleep position advice.

"I try to sleep more on my back, not squish my face in the pillow," Guerra said.

Thicker skin tends to get less wrinkled. It's the same for skin that has underlining support from fat, dermatologists say.
