Federal Election 2015: New Tory Attack Ad Is A Masterclass In Repetition

An ad uploaded by the Conservative party on Monday takes aim at Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau by recycling old lines into a new video.

An ad uploaded by the Conservative party on Monday takes aim at Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau by recycling old lines into a new video.

“This election is about our economy, your job, your family, your retirement,” a narrator says off-camera. “The stakes are high and we have a choice.”

In the ad, uploaded to YouTube, the narrator repeats messages heard in previous Conservative campaigns aimed at the NDP leader and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

“Justin thinks budgets balance themselves; he’s just not ready,” the narrator says over muted footage of Trudeau.

The frame pans to Mulcair, calling him a “career politician”

It’s a familiar line of attack that follows the release of three television ads targeting Mulcair, calling him a “another career politician” Canadians can’t afford.

Conservatives have also repeated the line on Twitter:

The Ottawa Citizen called the line an “audacious assessment” — several members of the Conservative cabinet are career politicians themselves, including Pierre Poilievre and Jason Kenney, plus Harper himself.

The new spot, titled “Our Economy,” also doesn’t acknowledge the Conservatives’ handling of the country's finances. Canada's economy has been shrinking for five straight months, making it close to impossible to avoid a recession.
