Projected 2016 top pick Auston Matthews to play in Switzerland, not juniors

Potential 2016 top pick Auston Matthews will play in Switzerland next season.

Matthews will play for the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League A instead of the Everett Silvertips of the Western League, the club announced.

The 17-year-old had been linked to the Zurich-based team for several months.

Matthews missed the cut for the 2015 NHL draft by three days and is projected to go first in 2016.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native had 48 points last season for the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Everett owns Matthews' rights, so he would have played there in his draft year if he opted not to go pro.
