Women Are Using Microwave Energy To Reduce Underarm Hair And Sweat

Adventures in extreme beauty measures.

While some celebrities are all aboard the armpit hair train, other women still want to get rid of their underarm hair...and are using extreme measures to do so.

Enter MiraSmooth, a new technology that banishes unwanted hair and sweaty pits by microwaving the underarms. Yes, you read that right.

Using "precisely controlled microwave energy," MiraSmooth promises to reduce the appearance of underarm hair and stop excessive perspiration permanently. The process takes about 60 minutes, and requires no surgical incisions or cuts. Temporary black lines and markings are used on the armpit to help guide the treatment, and local anesthesia is also applied to minimize pain. And apparently it's pretty effective -- the company's press release states patients have seen up to a 70 per cent reduction in underarm hair as a result of using the treatments.

The innovative technology is said to work with any type of hair and skin tone, as it doesn't require a chromophore like laser hair removal devices (yay for inclusiveness!).

But is it safe?

"While the safety and efficacy of microwave device treatment for sweating is fairly well established, there is less long-term data on the safety and efficacy of microwaves for hair removal,” certified dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Snehal P. Amin told Buzzfeed.

So...microwaving off your armpit hair and sweat...would you try it? Let us know in the comments below!
