Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte Will Now Have Real Pumpkin

This changes everything.

Your favourite fall drink, the pumpkin spice latte (PSL), now has a new ingredient: pumpkin.

According to Starbucks, the revamped PSL has new ingredients, including the addition of real pumpkin (and the elimination of caramel colouring).

The pumpkin spice will now have: sugar, condensed skim milk, pumpkin puree, two per cent or less of fruit and vegetable juice for colour, natural flavours, annatto (colour), potassium sorbate (preservative) and salt.

The drink will also obviously still include espresso, milk, spiced topping and the optional whipped cream.

"After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago," PSL creator Peter Dukes said in a blog post. "It was simple — espresso, perfectly steamed milk, warm fall spices with delicious flavour of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn."

This change follows last year's pumpkin controversy, when it was reported the fall latte actually contained no pumpkin at all. Since it was made to mimic pumpkin pie, Starbucks stated the flavouring was made up of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

PSL followers, of which there's basically an army on social media sites, will be back in full swing as we count down the final days of summer. And until it gets here (which usually happens around the beginning of September), you can always make your own version.

The PSL (well, soon to be the old PSL) has 380 calories (including all ingredients) and 49 grams of sugar. Check out what lies within your other favourite pumpkin-flavoured food and drinks in the slideshow below:
