Campus bands are as as much of the university experience as pitchers of beer and all-nighters — not necessarily part of the curriculum, but certainly part of your education.
In the States, there are plenty of bands known for getting their start in the hallowed halls of college. Groups like Vampire Weekend claim an Ivy League background, while R.E.M. was a notable fixture in the Athens, Georgia scene in the '80s.
So that got us wondering — which great Canadian bands came from great Canadian schools? As it turns out, there are quite a few names you'll know and love who found each other while (generally) studying for degrees that had nothing to do with music at all.
To be honest, we snuck in a couple of high schools in there too, but only because we assumed you were as curious as we were as to how things got started.
Take a look, and remember — the next big thing in music could just be playing for free at your local university pub.
