Melissa Bishop breaks Canadian 800m record at track world championships

Melissa Bishop shattered the Canadian record in the women's 800 metres Thursday, running 1 minute 57.52 seconds to win her semifinal at the world championships in Beijing.

The 27-year-old from Eganville, Ont., broke Diane Cummins's mark of 1:58.39, which had stood since 2001.

Canada's Fiona Benson also ran a personal best, clocking 1:59.59, but it was good for only fifth place in her semifinal and she did not advance to Saturday's final.
