It's famous for its garlic dipping sauce, late night orders and a super catchy phone number, but at the end of the day, no health expert is going to tell you to eat at Pizza Pizza for a well-balanced diet.

However, this doesn't mean we can't indulge in pizza from time to time, and that means ordering something from this Canadian chain. This week, we asked registered dietitians to take a look at the menu at the franchise, and choose at least one meal they would recommend to their clients. And because this is a pizza joint, they tried their hardest to stick with pizzas.

Not only is this week's list a little short, but some of our dietitians wouldn't recommend this fast food chain at all.

"I believe that any food fits into a healthy eating plan, however you don't get much bang for your health buck at Pizza Pizza," says registered dietitian Kathleen McClinton "After looking over their offerings, many of the items are very high in sodium. One slice of many of their pizzas would run someone close to a meal portion of calories; which isn't ideal because who doesn't intend to eat two or three slices?"

But if you are ordering from Pizza Pizza and trying to eat on the healthier side of things, our dietitians this week did come up with some alternatives. When sticking to pizza, ask for thin crust, whole grain crust and go heavy on your veggie toppings. If you're having a salad, watch out for that dressing. Lastly, complete each meal with something like a salad instead of fries or onion rings.

At the end of the day, pizza will be pizza, and it's up to you to make healthy decisions around it. Check out our list below of what dietitians would eat at Pizza Pizza. Let us know what you order.

In our series The Dietitian Dish, we ask Canadian dietitians what they would recommend as breakfast, lunch or dinner options at specific fast food and chain restaurants in the country. Please note, none of the dietitians below are associated with the restaurants we choose, and the restaurants are not paying us to dissect their food.
