Justin Bieber Explains His VMAs Tears To Jimmy Fallon

And wants to put his bad boy behaviour behind him.

When Justin Bieber burst into tears at the end of his crowd-pleasing performance at the VMAs this weekend, people wondered what exactly was going on.

But leave it to Jimmy Fallon to ask the star directly.

In an interview on the late night talk show on Wednesday, Fallon asked the 21-year-old what exactly had happened — and the Stratford, Ont.-born singer didn't hold back.

"It was just so overwhelming for me, everything .. I just wasn't expecting [the crowd] to support me in the way they did .. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed," Bieber explained, getting a little emotional once again.

And even more significantly, he addressed some of the bad boy behaviour he's been carrying out over the past few years (which has included multiple run-ins with traffic cops and immature pranks).

"I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me .. You have to figure out what you are okay with and what you're not okay with, but you have to test the waters. I just happened to be ... in the spotlight and in front of cameras all the time and they caught all those moments," he says.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Fallon interview without getting a musician to do something completely outside their wheelhouse, so he asked Bieber to sing his new hit, "Where Are U Now" as a country ballad. And Bieber — who made an appearance at the Country Music Awards in June — happily obliged.
