Twenty years ago, Igor Tscharkofsy came up with the idea to have mothers give birth in the Black Sea with wild dolphins assisting. The practice, which is called dolphin-attended birth, is trending and critics are chiming in saying it's a bad idea.
The Sirius Institute based in Hawaii helps people through the dolphin birthing process and cites the work of Tscharkofsy on their website.
The institute claims that giving birth with dolphins increases a child's rate of development and his or her brain mass in early years. The site also says that the research from Tscharkofsy is "sufficient for us."
For critics, giving birth in water that is also inhabited by sharks might not be the safest place for a newborn. The ocean also contains harmful bacteria and pathogens that can hurt babies, not to mention the the bacteria that dolphins carry.
