WestJet announced Tuesday that the airline would be offering tickets from St. John's Newfoundland to London, England for $199 CAD one way, as well as reduced prices for five other Canadian cities.

Provided the tickets are booked by Sept. 16 for travel between May 6 and June 28, 2016, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver will be priced at $299 CAD to London-Gatwick, with Toronto And Winnipeg starting at $249 and $279 respectively. Prices go up by $50 for travel dates from June 29 to Aug. 10, 2016.

WestJet announced it would be flying to London back in June, as part of its effort to expand out of its traditional low-cost niche to compete with larger airlines such as Air Canada.

The move was made after WestJet started to acquire larger aircrafts, including wide-bodied Boeing 767s, the same aircrafts that will be making their debut this spring in Gatwick, London.

The lower airfares set by WestJet will most likely start a price war between different airlines, said airline industry consultant Robert Kokonis in an interview with CBC.

"Canadians have been paying far too much to fly to Europe for far too long and today, as we have throughout our history, we're going to fix that," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, in a press release.

"We are offering non-stop flights at very low prices and we're proud to once again lower airfares and make travel more affordable."

Flights with other carriers for travel from Toronto - London for May 6, 2016 from Toronto to London, England were listed in Google Flights on Sept. 9 as ranging from $462 - $2,8511 CAD for economy class, and upwards of $1,143 CAD for business class, one-way.
