An American high school music teacher is accused of paying a Calgary boy for sexually explicit images and video chats.

David N. Adams, 29, of Branchburg, N.J., was charged this week with one count of online enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, said the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team joined forces with Calgary police and United States Homeland Security to make the arrest after a year-long investigation. Adams is being held without bail in New Jersey.

According to court documents, Adams befriended the 13-year-old victim through online gaming, and they communicated through text and video chats from June to September 2014. Adams was teaching at a middle school at the time.

The teacher allegedly asked the teen to masturbate during a video chat, and then sent him between $5 and $25 via PayPal, reported myCentralJersey.com citing court documents.

The attorney's office alleged on Wednesday that "defendant Adams watched and directed the victim’s actions."

Adams has been suspended from his job as a music teacher at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Somerset County, N.J.

"Law enforcement authorities have informed us that this is an ongoing investigation; however, none of the charges involve any of our students at this time," said a statement to parents from the school.

The charge of online enticement carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum potential of life in prison and a $250,000 fine, said officials.
