B.C. RCMP are looking for witnesses after a motorized chair scooter hit a 91-year-old man on a Burnaby sidewalk. He later died of his injuries in hospital.
Julio Chavez was standing at the corner of Edmonds Street and Mary Avenue around 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 when he was struck, RCMP said in a news release. A woman had been driving the blue scooter (similar to the one pictured below) along the sidewalk when she collided with the senior.
Chavez is seen falling to the ground in surveillance video obtained by Global News, with his head hitting the pavement hard. Witnesses rushed to help him, but he passed away the next day.
The man's family hopes that stricter rules for scooters will be put in place.
"When this happened, the police said it was not the first time," Chavez' granddaughter Kita Eserve told The Province, adding that she believes the driver stayed at the scene.
In July, video was posted to Youtube showing the aftermath of an alleged hit-and-run collision involving a similar blue scooter in Burnaby. An elderly woman was knocked over, according to the description, and the female driver left, despite witnesses asking her to stay.
The victim can be heard in Chinese, telling the person filming that the scooter driver crashed into her.
The driver is seen in the video scurrying away from a crowd and driving away.
