“Normal Barbie” is now more real than ever. The Lammily doll, which was created to have realistic body proportions, is getting her period.
Creator and graphic designer Nickolay Lamm told TIME, “It’s just what happens in real life. We wanted to put it on the doll so it’s not a scary thing.”
Kids can now purchase a $10 Period Party extension kit to learn about the menstrual cycle in a fun way. Besides colourful pads, the kit also comes with an educational pamphlet, a pair of panties for the doll and a calendar with dot stickers to track periods.
With these items, parents can “start an open and positive conversation” about periods with their kids.
Designer Lamm explained to Today.com that the doll’s latest bathroom accessory will help normalize periods. “If a doll has pads, how can [menstruation] be taboo?” Lamm said. “Periods are such an integral part of a woman's life, just like a healthy part of it. It shouldn't have to be swept under the rug.”
This isn’t the first time Lammily dolls have tried to break taboos. Last year, another extension pack was released which included add-ons such as acne, freckles and cellulite.
“Normal Barbie,” which arrived on the market in 2014, has also made news for encouraging girls to love their bodies.
