More People Have Died From Taking Selfies Than Shark Attacks This Year

A photo might be worth a thousand words, but it's never worth your life.

A photo might be worth a thousand words, but it's never worth your life.

This year alone, 12 people have died from selfie-related accidents, while shark attacks on the other hand have killed eight, Mashable reports.

The findings come just after a 66-year-old Japanese man died from falling down the steps of the Taj Mahal while trying to take a selfie. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, accidental falls while taking selfies accounted for 22 deaths between 2014 and 2015.

Other selfie deaths have involved crashes, collisions, electrocutions, weapons and animals. In August, a 32-year-old man was horrifically gored while trying to take a selfie during Spain's running with the bulls, The Mirror reports.

Although the numbers are not alarmingly high, they are a concern. In Russia, police launched a campaign urging the public to be more careful while taking photos.

Leaflets and online materials promoting the campaign warn the public, “A cool selfie could cost you your life” and “a selfie with a weapon kills."
