The spooky season is coming, and Netflix Canada is ready to put you in the mood with some scary titles — and some smart ones, too.
The streaming service has some outstanding offerings for the month of October. And while it has Halloween-friendly titles such as the TV series "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" and "Bates Motel," the highlight is "Beasts of No Nation."
It's a Netflix original starring Idris Elba as a commandant in the story of a child soldier forced to fight in an African civil war.
Cary Fukunaga, who directed the first season of "True Detective," wrote and helmed this series that is already generating Oscar hype despite the fact it's coming out on TV.
Those who are looking to Netflix for a good fright this month will also find plenty of titles such as the terrifying "The Conjuring," "Halloween: Resurrection," and "Seed of Chucky."
It is also adding the 1998 witch movie "Practical Magic" starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, as well as the documentary "The Nightmare."
In other words, there are plenty of films available to exercise your brain, or make your heart skip a beat.
Here are the titles coming to Netflix Canada in October:
Alfonso Cuarón set a new standard for space adventure with this film about two astronauts (Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) left to drift in space after debris destroys their shuttle. The film won several Academy Awards including best directing, cinematography, and editing.
"The Beach" author Alex Garland made his film directing debut with this outstanding sci-fi about a scientist (Oscar Isaac) who invites a programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) to test one of his humanoid robots (Alicia Vikander) and see just how lifelike it really is.
"The Dark Knight"
The sequel to "Batman Begins" all but obliterated any memory of its predecessor, thanks to the late Heath Ledger's manic performance as The Joker. Christian Bale stars as the caped crusader trying to stop him from spreading mayhem throughout Gotham.
Filmmaker Paul Greengrass' frenetic camerawork and smart direction elevated this real-life story of a ship captain (Tom Hanks) who was kidnapped by Somali pirates off the horn of Africa.
"Scream: Season 1"
Just in time for Halloween, Netflix releases this original series adapted from the slasher film series that frightened audiences throughout the late '90s. In this case, a cyberbullying incident leads to a murder, and frightening memories of the masked killings that haunted Woodsboro, Calif.
"Hemlock Grove: The Final Chapter"
One of the early Netflix originals, "Hemlock Grove" reaches its final season, chronicling the strange happenings in a fictional town in Pennsylvania.
Kids and Family
"Despicable Me 2"
Those klutzy, adorable minions are back as former supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to stop El Macho (Benjamin Bratt), an evil-doer who is believed to have stolen a mutagen from the Arctic Circle.
