'Beeba Boys': Watch Exclusive Footage From Deepa Mehta's New Film

Inspired by true events.

Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta's new film, "Beeba Boys," is inspired by the true events that unfolded during the 1990s deep in Metro Vancouver's crime scene.

The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival but will be released across Canada on Oct. 16.

Mongrel Media released a new exclusive trailer to The Huffington Post Canada.

In the movie, Randeep Hooda plays a stylish Vancouver kingpin named Jeet Johar who takes on an old-style Indo-Canadian crime syndicate for control of the region's drug trade, with his Beeba — or good — boys.

Though many people see the film as a dramatization of the rise and fall of notorious gangster Bindy Johal, Mehta explained that her film is not the Johal story.

In a recent interview with the Tribune of India, Mehta says that the film is a morality tale about a dark side of the Canadian immigrant story and the impact the violence had on those communities.

"How tragic it was… the collateral damage being the bewildered families who had migrated to Canada primarily to give their children a chance at a better life," she told the publication.
