North American stock markets continue upward push; Canadian dollar up

TORONTO — Thte Toronto Stock Exchange and U.S markets began on a positive note Wednesday.

The S&P/TSX index gained 180.24 points to 13,827.5 shortly after markets opened. On Tuesday, the index rose 95.06 points  resulting in an advance of 405 points over three trading days.

The Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was up 152.63 points at 16,942.82, while the broader S&P 500 index advanced 17.48 points and the Nasdaq gained 38.76 points to 4,787.12.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.27 of a U.S. cent at 77.03 cents.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $2 to US$1,144.40 an ounce, the November crude contract was up 93 cents at US$49.46 a barrel and the November contract for natural gas was up five cents at US$2.52.
