Rick Mercer Knows This Election Has Dragged On And Wants You To 'Remain Vigilant'

Canada's seemingly infinite election has dragged on so long that Rick Mercer says he would rather drink paint than watch another campaign ad.

"We are 66 days in and I would love to tell you that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but with two weeks left to go I can't even see the tunnel," the comedian says in his latest rant, which was featured in the premiere of the 13th season of "Rick Mercer Report."

Mercer says the campaign's duration, as well as Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's limited intake of questions from the media, has shifted the election race's focus from topics like the economy to the "the definitive issue of the campaign: the niqab."

"If this keeps up, in a week we will be discussing which leader has the best hair," he says. "Oh right, we did that."

Mercer says in the video that he wants voters to "remain vigilant" and remember that they — and not politicians — are running the show.

"Remember this is not their election. It is ours," he says.

"They do not get to choose what this election is about, we do. Just like we get to choose who runs this country. That's our job. All we have to do is show up and do it."

While his show was off the air, Mercer spoke to students at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S about the importance of the youth vote.

“I can assure you every single political party in this country, whether they want to or not, every single one of them take it for granted and assume it as fact that young people will not show up to vote in large numbers,” he said in his speech.
