Why Motherhood Got Anna Silk To Team Up For International Day Of The Girl

Why you should all mark down Oct. 11 on your calendars.

Oct. 11 officially belongs to the girls.

The United Nations declared the date International Day of the Girl back in 2012, but what does that actually mean?

For actress Anna Silk, the day is a reminder of the barriers girls face, such as poverty, lack to quality education and issues over equality. It's part of the reason the "Lost Girl" star teamed up with Plan International as their newest Canadian ambassador. The non-profit is one of a handful of organizations backing the U.N. declaration.

But for Silk, the decision to get involved started back when she came across Plan's "Because I am Girl" campaign. She told the Huffington Post Canada the next step came after the birth of her son. That got her thinking about the obstacles millions of women face when it comes to healthcare access.

To see how Silk and Plan Canada teamed up to spread awareness on that issues and many more, check out the video above.
