Manitoba to offer HPV vaccine to boys in bid to stop some cervical cancers

WINNIPEG — Manitoba is to become the latest province to offer the HPV vaccine for free to boys as well as girls.

Health Minister Sharon Blady says the vaccine program will be expanded next year to include Grade 6 and Grade 9 boys.

Human papillomavirus — or HPV — can cause cervical and other forms of cancer.

Studies have suggested vaccinating boys can prevent transmission of the virus and save millions in health-care costs.

Prince Edward Island, Alberta and Nova Scotia are already offering HPV vaccine to boys as well as girls.

Blady says the immunizations will be voluntary and parents will be asked for consent.
