Loonie, U.S. index futures up ahead of stock market open

TORONTO — The Canadian dollar was holding steady shortly before North American stock markets opened Thursday.

The loonie was up 0.06 of a U.S. cent at 76.18 ents US.

Stock market futures were also positive. The Dow Jones industrial futures were up 110.0 points at 17,1776.0, the S&P 500 futures advanced 10.5 points to 2,019.0 and the Nasdaq futures gained 29.5 points to 4,428.8.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $1.60 to US$1,165.50 an ounce, the November crude contract was up 50 cents at US$45.70 a barrel and the November contract for natural gas was unchanged at US$2.40.

On Wednesday, the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX index ended the day down 137.73 points at 13,704.19.
