Psychiatrist loses licence for two years after being guilty of misconduct

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A Newfoundland doctor has had his license suspended for two years after an adjudication tribunal found him guilty of professional misconduct.

Dr. Syed Rizvi was found guilty after engaging in sexual intercourse and other sexual activity with a female patient in St. John's in 2005.

He is a psychiatrist who is part of the province's methodone program.

Hundreds of patients were left temporarily without care when his licence was first suspended in September by the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Rizvi must also complete a course on understanding boundaries in doctor-patient relationships, and have a chaperon present for a year when he treats female patients.
