Belgian princess visits Vancouver, Calgary to increase trade, investment

VANCOUVER — Belgium's ambassador to Canada says there are plenty of opportunities for trade and investment between his country and Western Canada.

Raoul Delcorde says the northwestern European nation invested $3.3-billion in Canada in 2013, but has had a less visible presence in B.C. and Alberta.

He says that will change when a trade delegation of 228 people — including a Belgian royal — makes a week-long visit to Vancouver and Calgary beginning this weekend.

The group includes Belgium's foreign affairs minister, representatives from more than 100 companies and Princess Astrid, who will visit the Vancouver aquarium and companies such as ASCO Aerospace Canada.

On Monday, the B.C. government will sign an agreement to increase trade and investment with the Brussels regional government.

Several companies from both countries are also expected to sign agreements during the trip saying they will help each other to work in other regions, including across Europe and Asia.
