WINNIPEG — The union representing city of Winnipeg employees says its workers can clear snow cheaper than private contractors.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees local 500 says a consultant’s report done by a former employee of the city’s fleet management agency estimates bringing snow clearing in-house could save $3 million per year.
It says part of the savings would come from using some of the equipment it would need to purchase for spring cleaning and summer construction.
But the union also admitted it doesn’t have the numbers needed for a year-round, apples-to-apples comparison.
It wants the city to run the numbers for itself.
City administration is currently working on a report about city snow clearing, but its release has been delayed twice.
