Saskatchewan's large business recycling program to begin January 1st

REGINA — A recycling program for large businesses is to begin across Saskatchewan on Jan. 1.

Businesses that generate less than $2 million dollars in gross annual revenue, less than one tonne of paper per year, or operate as a single point of retail are permanently exempt from participating.

Businesses with annual revenue between $2 and $5 million, as well as for all newspapers, have a transition period exemption until January 1, 2017.

The recycling program is cost-shared between businesses and municipalities and recycles paper, newsprint, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass packaging.

It will be managed by Multi-Material Stewardship Western, which will collect fees based on the size of each business and the amount of recycling and will reimburse municipalities for collection of waste paper and packaging.
