Hannah Haughn scores winner as Thunderbirds upset Vikes 2-1 in CIS field hockey

VICTORIA — Hannah Haughn scored the winner in the second half as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds upset the host Victoria Vikes 2-1 on Friday in preliminary round action at the CIS women's field hockey championship.

Sophie Jones added the other goal for UBC (1-1), which beat the Vikes for the first time in five tries this season.

Amanda Kurianowicz opened the scoring at 14:18 of the first half for Victoria (1-1), which suffered its first loss of the year.

Later Friday, Alison Lee scored as the Toronto Varsity Blues picked up their first win of the tournament with a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.

Tegan Stairs also found the back of the net for Toronto (1-1) in the 17th minute.

Allison Chute tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 32nd minute for the Gryphons (1-1).
