Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Greater Toronto Area, calling for strong and gusty winds of up to 85 km/h.
The statement is in effect for York, Durham, Halton and Peel, stretching westward as far as Windsor, where strong gusts were reported Thursday morning.
Winds are expected continue throughout the day and will begin to calm Thursday night.
Intermittent showers are expected throughout the course of the day, continuing through the evening and overnight and to Friday.
A cold front bringing strong southwesterly winds is to blame. It's spreading eastward across Southwestern Ontario through the morning period gusting to about 80 km/h. Other areas such as Picton and the Sandbanks Park area near Lake Ontario should expect gusts beginning Thursday afternoon.
A wind warning is also in effect in eastern Lake Erie where even stronger winds, with frequent gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected.
