Kate Winslet Calls Public Gender-Pay Discussions 'Vulgar'

"“I don't think that's a very nice conversation to have publicly at all."

Kate Winslet admits she has a problem with discussion about the gender pay gap in Hollywood — calling the public salon talk “vulgar.”

“I understand why they are coming up, but maybe It’s a British thing,” the Academy Award-winning actress said in an interview with the BBC earlier this week.

“I don't think that's a very nice conversation to have publicly at all,” she said about attention being brought to the difference in what leading men and woman make.

She acknowledged that she’s been “very lucky” in her own career and “quite happy” with the projects that come her way.

Though she was reluctant to comment on other people’s opinions on Hollywood’s pay gap issue, she mentioned she belongs to an exclusive club of female actresses who haven’t had to deal with the blunt force of Hollywood sexism.

“I haven't ever felt that I've really had to stick up for myself just because I'm a woman,” she said.

But Zoë Saldana can’t say the same. Speaking to media at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards last month, an event Winslet also attended, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actress says the double standard is alive and well in the industry.

“It’s hard because when a man speaks up he’s a genius, and when a woman speaks up she’s a bitch,” Saldana said, explaining when a woman is viewed as difficult, “she’s a diva.”

Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence brought renewed attention to gender pay gaps after she penned an essay calling out a Sony producer for calling Angelina Jolie a “spoiled brat” for the simple act of wanting to negotiate her contract.

“For some reason, I just can’t picture someone saying that about a man,” wrote Lawrence.
