Toronto Police have arrested a 49-year-old suspect in a sexual assault cold case that happened near Thorncliffe Park in July of 1990.
Austin Wyclef Thomas was arrested in the United Kingdom and extradited to Canada to face charges on Tuesday.
Police allege that on July 27, 1990 Thomas entered a ground floor apartment near Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard through an open window and attacked a woman who was asleep inside.
They say he then tried to choke the woman and sexually assaulted her.
In 2002 the Sex Crimes unit was able to develop a DNA profile of a male suspect and it was added to the national DNA database in Ottawa.
Then in 2013 the cold case was reviewed by Project Timeless and investigators identified Thomas as the male suspect.
Since then police have worked with Interpol and British police to locate Thomas and bring him to Canada.
He appeared in Toronto court this morning for a bail hearing.
This is the second cold case Toronto police believe they've cracked this week. On Tuesday, a 61-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder in the 1990 slaying of a gas station attendant.
