Canadian dollar, North American stock markets down

TORONTO — North American stock markets and the Canadian dollar were down Friday morning.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX index was down 82.46  points at 13,044.72. That follows a 214.75-point decline on Thursday. 

The Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was down 142.91 points at 17,305.16, while the broader S&P 500 index declined 16.59 points to 2,029.38 and Nasdaq lost 52.97 points to 4,952.11.

The Canadian dollar was down 0.32 of a cent at 74.97 cents US.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract was up 50 cents at US$1,081.50 an ounce, the December crude contract was down $1.23 at US$40.52 a barrel and the December contract for natural gas was up six cents at US$2.32.
